What Is Stainless Steel 304 Coil?

Grade 304 is an austenitic alloy in the T300 series, built on a chromium-nickel base. It carries a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with carbon capped at 0.08%, and carries the UNS designation S30400.

That chromium content forms a passive oxide layer on the surface. The layer self-repairs when scratched or machined, which is why 304 resists rust without any applied coating. Coils arrive in the mill-rolled, unslit form, ready for slitting, forming, or welding downstream.

Features & Characteristics

Grade 304 welds cleanly using most standard methods, and it holds up well under deep drawing without cracking. Toughness stays consistent even at sub-zero temperatures, unlike carbon steel, which can turn brittle in cold service.

The alloy is austenitic, so it does not respond to heat treatment the way martensitic grades do. Instead, it work-hardens under cold working, gaining strength through cold rolling or forming rather than through precipitation reactions. This property makes it useful in applications that call for both formability during fabrication and strength in service. Cleaning stays simple too, since the surface does not pit easily, and standard detergents and water remove most residues without damaging the finish.

Testing & Certification

Abhay Steels tests raw material before manufacturing and retests the finished coil. Five checks run in the lab: chemical composition, micro- and macrostructure, hydrostatic pressure, alloy verification, and raw material conformity.

Every shipment carries mill test certificates, and clients can request ISO documentation or 100% radiography reports where the application demands it. These documents confirm chemical composition and mechanical properties match the ordered specification, not just the grade name on the invoice.

Manufacturing Process

The coil making process begins with hot rolling the slab to a strip, then cold rolling to final gauge. Annealing restores ductility lost in cold working. Pickling removes the oxide scale formed in heat treating.

Each coil then goes through a testing stage before packing and dispatch.
